Topic: Bladder infections

Our Bichon has had several bladder infections (she's 3 years old), and even had to have some bladder stones removed. She's on UD prescription diet to help prevent this. Any other suggestions as to what we could do to help build her resistance to these infections? Thanks!

Thanks so much for your home page. Everyone's stories are so similar and so interesting. We have two Bichon's, Cecil and Ilsa. They are siblings from the same litter and are about 4 years old. They are terrific company for each other and can't bear to be separated, even for vet visits. We brush their teeth twice a day with a Bruan\Oral B electric toothbrush and they come running every time they hear the toothbrush start up! Our little Ilsa is perfectly healthy, but Cecil has trouble with bladder stones and allergies. We've switched to a protein-reduced diet for the stones, and we're using Tavist antihistamine to control the allergies. We tried boosting his immune system with vaccinations but it didn't seem to work very well, and we couldn't bear giving him shots on a regular basis. Any suggestions from anyone? I noticed these problems are mentioned somewhat regularly by others, is there any way that replies to these questions could also be posted could be posted for the great benefit of us all? Keep up the great work. I love the puppy pictures!

Topic: two bichon's

We have two bichons Pud and Puf, husband and wife, respectively. They are the loves our lives. We have had allergies, hot spots, and them just being bichons. Pud the boy has gotten lost so many times I can't recall. When he was a puppy he fell in a man hole and did not make a peep until I went and found him. He also likes to fall into grates along the streets. Now the girl, Puf, she is a little more cordinated. She only falls up the steps. But they ours. You can tell they are husband and wife, some days they will argue and not even look at each other, just me and my husband. But rest assured by evening, they are in bed together, and all is forgotten. Most of the time they play like a couple of little puppies. I guess one of their characteristics are they never grow up. How true. If Pud goes away with his Dad for the night, Puf sits and cries, but just like a male Pud could care less if she takes off for the night.

Topic: dry skin

Me again. I ran out of space the first time. But I was told by a lady that runs a kennel where we take out two bichons for their get away weekends. We put 1/2 tsp. of vegetable oil on their dry food, especially in the winter when you have the heat on. It does seem to help. And they seem to like it. Sorry I am hogging up all of the space. It is really nice to see other people that love their bichon's as much as we do. My husband keeps telling me that they are going to lock me up, because of the way I act with mine.

Topic: bichon hot spots

our 9 mo bichon Kippy has twice gotten hot spots we think on each side of her head causing an $80 trip to the vet for shaving, shots and medicine. she seems to scratch alot. is there anything we should be doing to help stop this problem from reoccuring?

also, watching for her to come in heat - any signs to watch for? want to breed her but not until 2 years.

also, poor thing seems to get car sick quite easily. vet says to bear with it - any ideas?

Topic: Diabetic Bichon

I have been owned by Bichons for over 15 years and have loved every minute of it. My last master(DusDee) was acuired via a free beautiful bichon ad in the newspaper. Right!!! This poor little thing was 6months old and only weighed 2 1/1 pounds, and was looking for her 5th owner. I was fearful for her life.. I took her to have her put out of her misery and when the vet and I checkd her out discovered she was diabetic. To make a long story short-we decided to save her and today she is a 10 pound sugar baby. She gets her WD diet and insulin shots twice a day. She is spoiled rotten and she deserves to be. I love being owned by bichons.

Topic: enzyme defic.-pancreas

Our bichon-Casey-(16 mos.)- has an enzyme deficiency in his pancreas. At approx. 5 mos. old, he lost all energy, lost weight, and had diarhea several times daily. After several tries at remedies through our vet, a blood test was done and determined this problem. Through the-supplement-PANCREZYME- he got back to normal in a short amount of time. He has to continue this supplement throughout his life. He takes 1\2 t. twice a day, mixed with canned food.

I don't have a Bichon, I have three Wheatons and a Yellow Lab. These are all the loves of our lives. I do have a neighbor who is looking for a Bichon and I promised her that I would search the net to try to help her find one. Your site was very enjoyable and helpful. Thank you.

Topic: question

We haven't owned a dog for three years and are considering buying either a bichon or bichon-shih-tzu cross.

As we both work daily, and have no children, are they able to be at home by themselves for 6 to 8 hours weekdays? Does anyone have information on a bichon-shih tzu cross?

Topic: Allergies and Breeders

We are very interested in adopting a Bichon because of the stories we have heard of them being "hypo-allergenic". Does anyone have any information they can share with us on the topic? We REALLY want a dog and my husband is highly allergic to all dogs we are familiar with.

We are seeking reputable breeders in the Ohio Valley area: Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, etc. Thanks a lot for any information!! We really appreciate it!

Topic: I Love Bichon's

Hello! I have a male Bichon named Hugo! He was 3 years old on Oct.1, 1996. I think that they are the most lovable/cute dogs! (Same with Westies and Scotties) I also have those. I think that evryone should have a bichon as a life long companion. They're great and I love them!! Those cheerful dogs!!!!!!!!

Topic: Mind of Their Own

Our three year old Bichon Buddy is almost untrainable. He loves his walks in an off leash area near our house. When left off leash he will not even pay attention to his favorite goodies. When he is good and tired of running and being chased he comes around for a pat and treat. This may take 30 minutes. He also has a love of chocolate. On three occasions he has helped himself to a poor placed chocalate bar, chocolate bunny and once a one pound box of chocolate. We are ammazed that he survived! The living room sofa's did not. He is most lovable and attentive little friend you could ever want, but why are Bichon's so head strong? Frank & Joan Nolte

Topic: The Perfect Companions

We got our first bichon at 10 wks. old. He's now 1 yr. 10 mos. old and we couldn't figure out why he still acted like a puppy. Then we read in a book that the puppyhood of a bichon lasts 3-4 years. Last April, we rescued a 6-yr. old bichon named Dudley. He immediately became Reggie's (our pup) protector and Reggie adores him. These are the most wonderful dogs! They absolutely adore humans and crave our companionship. They're always happy and loving and I wouldn't trade them for the world. They are the perfect pet!

If you're looking for a dog that will give you years of love, the bichon is the one!

Topic: LUV This site and...

my 6-old Bichon Sophie. I have to admit that actually the appropriate word is "adore" as any of my friends would tell you. She goes with me whenever the situation and weather permits, and always "asks" to go EXCEPT on work days (she knows the difference). She also has exceptionally good hearing. She can be in the living room, I'll be changing clothes in the bathroom, and she comes running, ready to go. Soph lives with 4 cats so she has a lot of cat-like actions (sleeping on top of the recliner chair is just one of them). One of my co-workers has Soph's sister from another litter, Stella. So daily we talked about our girls.

I'll never be without a Bichon, but next time I'll get two (I worry that she and I are too attached to each other).

Topic: What A Great Surprise!!

I was so thrille to find this site while doing an assignment for my college computer class! We purchased a Bishon 6 months ago and I have been so amused to read about the similarities that I have experienced with her that so many other Bishon owners experience. She has thrown up in the car so many times I began to wonder if she would ever get over it!! It also took me four months to potty train her!! I thought we would never get through that. She is a delight and follows me wherever I go in the house. I also have 3 children who love and adore her. She has been great!

Topic: WE Lost our Buffy

We have had two bichons now for more than a decade .. we had three, but one was killed in a fire several years ago. Our oldest, Buffy, died Friday, and we are so sad and teary. FRomper, the male she left behind, is disconsolate. We are thinking we mat get a puppy ,, will it help him to get over the loss??? Buffy was the usual sunny disposition of the bichons .. but she was much much more .. I loved to see her running in the wind, ears flapping, tisl feathers sailing as she ran in our acre .. into my arms for a hug. She was very special and will remain in our hearts forever.

Where is your kennel located? Do you know of any kennels in Missouri where we will be traveling in a few months??? Thanks for having this page .. please visit our memorial to Buffy at http://bluevalleydesignworks.com. Just push to IN MEMORY button on the cover page and it'll take you there.
