Topic: Dena's Grooming Tips

Hi Dena - How nice of you to offer to share your grooming hints for pet Bichons that will keep them looking fluffy and nice. I would love to know them and I am sure others would, too. Are you on the Bichon Discussion List or what is your e-mail address, or can you give them in the Guest Book? Maybe you have a Home Page. Thanks so much for sharing! My e-mail is roehmer@newportnet.com. Margaret

We have a 6 month old Bichon named Binkey (actually Binksford of North Topsail) and he is a trip. Currently has a "hot spot" from either grooming or allergies. Any help for either?

Hi, we have a 2 year old Bichon named Shauna and she is the most lovely, intelligent and obedient dog we could ever have wished for. She gets called Nutty most of the time because she is so lively and crazy! She absolutely adores our 2 cats although they arn't as keen about her but she doesn't let that deter her affections! Your page is great I which it had been available to us when she was a pup. Keep up the good work.

This is a fabulous page, especially for those considering a new puppy. Bichons are, I believe, the ultimate house dog. I have an 8 month old bichon named Harley. He is always in to something! I HAD a Christmas tree up... let's just say he keeps me on my toes.

Topic: Housebreaking

My husband and I owned a wonderful Golden Retriever who passed away a little over a year ago. We are considering purchasing a Bichon. We have done alot of research on the breed but we are told repeatedly from breeders that Bichons are horrendous to housebreak taking from 6 to 12 months! We had our Golden housetrained in one week. We would dearly love to get a Bichon (or two), but are quite concerned about this. We are both working professionals and wouldn't be home during the day but will have our neighbours nanny and their children come in a few times a day to let the puppy out. What can we expect? Does anyone know of a few reputable breeders in the Cincinnati area? Thanks!

Topic: Blackeyed Duchess Sasha

I love reading about all these Bichons!! My Sasha is of course totally adorable. She "talks" to me constantly. Is this something everyone else experiences? She definitely has separation anxiety when I am out of sight for any reason.

I do have one tip for anyone who has experienced problems with those red streaks that can come from a Bichon's eyes. My groomer suggested giving Sasha one Rolaids tablet a day. Apparently this reduces the acid in her stomach so that her eyes do not streak red/orange. My vet says that it is perfectly okay for her to have it and she thinks it's a treat. It does work beautifully. I'm also very careful to feed her food that has no artificial color added to it so that her beard and facial hair do not turn colors.

These are fabulous animals. Sorry, Sasha really isn't sure she's an animal. She sure acts like a little human!!

Topic: TRAINING BICHONS

I have a 5 yr old Bichon baby named Randy. After 6 months of trying to train him (he wanted to go out every night at 3 and 6 am) I left him with my daughter 1 weekend. Imagine my surprise when she said he didn't ask to go out once! SHE LET HIM SLEEP IN HER BED. Well, now he goes for his walk at 11pm and will sleep in til noon the next day just because he is all cuddled up under the blankets. NEVER ASKED TO GO OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AGAIN!!

Topic: HOUSE BREAKING

In Reply to the housebreaking tips: I have a 8 month old Bichon named Brandy. Everyone kept telling me how hard they were to housebreak too, but I found it very easy. All you have to do is hang a small cow bell on the door where she goes out and touch her nose to it so it sounds everytime you take her out. With in 3 weeks she will ring the bell when she has to go out. I advice going out with her the first month or so. So you know she's did her job and don't just ring it to be playing. Make sure the bell is low enough so your baby can get to it. Also we have a wire create that she stays in when we go to work, and at night when my children don't sneak her into bed with them. HEHEHE. Try this It's worked for us and everyone we have gave a bell to try.
