Topic: Tear Stains

Tear stains can often be easy to correct. Years ago while working with vets it was a commom problem among poodles. Often but not always it was just clogged tear ducts. They can be flushed and no more tears. Sometime it can be an extra set of eyelashes that rub on the cornea. They are very tiny and hard to see without proper equipment. They can be removed by electrolisis. I have heard that some foods may make the problem worse. I dont believe this. Extra tearing is a mechanical problem. Where the food comes into play is that the chemical balance changes and the tearing doesnt stain. Best to find out WHAT CAUSES the tearing, NOT just to make the color change. My dogs have NO STAINING OR EXTRA TEARING. Over the years they have had different food here and when with handlers. Cindy Sierra Dawn Bichons

Topic: Biscuit

Hi again. I need a little help on a couple of things. Firstly, what exactly is crate training? I am endeavouring to house train my five month old puppy, but she is a little stubborn. She will go if I take her outside, and she isn't allowed full run of the house unless someone is home with her, so she has decided that the laundry/hallway area is her potty place. Close, but not quite good enough. She won't let us know if she wants to go, but we have learned to look for the signs, and we have also learned not to ignore them, because she doesn't give much warning.

Secondly, tear stains. I am about to change Biscuits diet, because her vet says she doesn't have blocked tear ducts, and she can't see anything else wrong, so I think I will cut back on the red meat. Is rice, pasta, chicken and vegetables alright for Bichons? Biscuit would probably be a vegetarian if she was allowed. She loves fruit and raw vegetables.

Topic: my adorable bichon

my bichon is the most precious pal to me. his name is Milo. He is fifteen months old. He never leaves my side. When I leave him at home , he cries like a human baby. He loves to cuddle up and he loves to ride in the car. He puts his head on the pillow just like a human. Sometimes he thinks he is human. When i return home for a short while away from home , he seems to argue with me. at nights he actually lets me know when its time for us to go to sleep. He loves to be the center of attention. He knows when the school bus arrives at home. He is sad when the kids leave for school. He knows the car from far off. Its the greatest joy to own a bichon. I hope share each other's company for many years to come. Indeed he is a true companion.

Topic: The Love of our Life!

Our bichon frise, "Sir Bouncy Happyface Raffles" is the love of our lives. His name is Raffles for short (named after the beautiful Raffles hotel in Singapore). After 10 years of marriage and several miscarriages, I had given up on having a baby. My husband, who is Swedish, has the belief that if you get a dog, you'll have a baby. Well, the first dog we purchased in 1992 was a Borzoi (he lasted 2 hours in our home until we had to return him due to a severe allergic reaction I had to him). I didn't know at the time, but I was pregnant. Shortly after returning him (about 5 days), I mis- carried. In 1994, my husband decided to give it another shot. He knew how much I loved bichons (we used to go to all the dog shows just to see them perform), so he took me to a breeder in March of that year. It was going to be a surprise for me - a belated birthday present (my birthday was in January, but he told me my gift would be a bit late - little did I know why!) So one Sunday we took a drive, rang the bell to the breeder's home (I thought we were househunting) and the cutest little bichon came to the door. I told my husband that was the kind of dog I loved (I hadn't realized my husband had paid so much attention to the fact that I really wanted this dog). We went inside with him still not saying a word. I was prepared to meet our new "builder" so I thought. Out came about 8 adorable little bichons 12 weeks old. I wanted to take them all home, but knew I couldn't. I waited for the right one to come to me, but nothing. Suddenly the basement door flew open and this unbelievably tiny and very tired pure white fluffy little thing that looked like a stuffed animal walked up to me and looked me in the eyes. I melted as he just "wee wee'd" on the tile floor in front of me. I knew this was the one. He was only 8 weeks old, the pick of the litter. He slept all the way home inside my coat. When we got his papers, I thought I'd die. He was born on MY BIRTHDAY, January 5th. This was just too bizarre for me. To top it off, I got pregnant the very next month. I'm only 5' 2" and I wound up having a 9 1/2 lb. and 22 1/2" long beautiful baby girl (guess when? January 1995!) Now, Raffles, Gianna and I (along with almost every other member of my family who are also born in January) celebrate our birthdays together. My husband's birthday is February 1st. We're thinking of getting another bichon soon. Perhaps another baby next February? We'll let the 2nd bichon decide on that! At any rate, Raffles and my baby girl get along splendidly and all I can say is thank God we have a king size bed big enough for all of us. My mother, who is terminally ill and lives with us, has also enjoyed the affection, love and devotion Raffles offers. He and the baby are a God-send. As they say, when God closes a door, He opens a window; and in our case, it couldn't be more true.

Topic: New Bichon Puppy

Hi! We just brought home our new puppy today...a 8 wk 2 day old male bichon that is just adorable! My question is, all of the literature I have read about Bichons state how lively and friendly they are. Ours hasnt been lively since we brought him home. He just sits wherever we put him, and doesnt attempt to walk or run or do anything but lay there and look at us. He loves when we hold him and he loved to be brushed, but thats about it. I know that it takes time to become acclimated to new surroundings, but is this normal? this is the tamest pup I have ever seen. Any replies from veteran Bichon owners would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much!

Topic: Bichons--the friendliest

I just got a Bichon puppy, she is 9 weeks old, and the friendliest dog I have ever encountered. When we are at play outside, she jumps at the chance to meet everyone in sight! She loves people, and is always on her best behavior in their presense! Of course I am sure that their compliments and attention make her this way!

We just had a litter of Bichon Frise puppies and how cute they are. I never get anything done any more because I can sit for hours watching them breath and make their little sounds. They look like "Little Lambs". I can't wait for them to grow and play with each other. Thanks so much!

I have two Bichons Frises, Sunny and Waldo. They are not brothers, but they are nearly the same age. I don't remember what we did before we had such a wonderful way as the Internet/Web to find all the great information and to get in touch with others and share information about Bichons!

Bichon owners in the KC area - get in touch! We'd like to get a fluff club together and do things that involve bichons by the dozens!

Topic: Special Love

I had my first Bichon for 15 years. She was so much comfort when I lived alone. Nichole would be at the door waiting for me when I got home from work every evening. I remarried and my new husband was taken with her, also. After she died, I started looking for another Bichon...which is the best compliment you can give a pet. Now we have another 'Niki' who is 5 years old. I do not believe I will ever have another breed of dog. Bichons are loving and loyal to their masters.
