Topic: Having Puppies

We are about to breed our 2 1/2 year old Bichon Cabo. She is an average size about 17 pounds. Does anyone know what size litter we should expect? Her mother we were told had very small litters 1-3 puppies. What is the norm? We also have a problem with her barking for attention or to go out, is that an unusual trait, otherwise she is delightful.

Topic: BICHON PUPPY-NORTHERN,CA

I have done a great deal of reading and research and I have decided I would LOVE to have a Bichon. Can anyone recommend a breeder in the Northern California Bay Area (Solono County to the Silicon Valley). We have seen ads in the paper but they are individual owners who have bred their pets and we would prefer to purchase a puppy from a serious breeder. Thank you for your help

Topic: Melissa Ann So Lovable

I love the bichon I have now. I never knew they existed until four years ago when my best friend introduced me to his. I bought one a year and a half ago from him after he breeded his. Some people say it is bad to give them rawhide to chew on and others say it is not. I am concerned because I do not know whether to let her have it or not. Is it really bad for them? Is there something else I can offer her that is not so bad, and it would help her keep her teeth strong and healthy.

Topic: DUSTY - MY BICHON PUPPY

We have a Bichon Puppy 10 months old and he is a joy. We are looking for another to keep him company, as we lost out older dog a few days ago and poor Dusty is so lonely. They are a great breed, cute, funny, smart. If anyone would like to chat about their Bichon or if you're thinking of owning one e-mail me, I would to chat.

Topic: My 5 bichons

I have five bichons that definitely rule the house. The personality of them is the best thing about the breed. All five have many of the same characteristics but each has his or her own special qualities. The only negative trait that I can think of is their stubborn streak!

Topic: False pregnency

We have had our Bicheon (Tera) for 7 years and love her very much. We decided not to breed her and she goes through what I call false pregnancy. Her breasts have milk and she caries a play toy everywhere she goes. She even got into the cuboards and pushed everything in the cuboard out onto the floor. Other than getting her fixed is there anything we can do for her. Also what is the oldest age you can bread them safely.

Topic: To Buy Or Not To Buy

This is addressed to the Bichon people at the Delmar Ca kennel club show. Some people were there discouraging the owning of Bichons. These were Bichon people. Sounds odd doesnt it? I did not hear it first hand, but I got several calls on it. Litature on why NOT to purchase or own a Bichon. These people do make themselves look a little stupid to the people I talked to. These are Bichon people trying to talk other people into not wanting a Bichon because of high mantainence hard to house break and so on. Lots of breeds would be hard for the average pet person to keep in a show coat, like a Poodle, Old English and a lot of other breeds. How many Poodles do you see in a show coat? Anyway Bichons are not any more difficult when keeping them in a pet coat. Most of mine are fairly short in the summer anyway. I havent read the stuff these people are telling me about, but they all got the same impression. They feel that these people come across as pretty stupid because they are Bichon owners trying to keep the breed all to themselves. I would like to hear from other Bichon people who have run into people like that. Or the people who have TRIED to get a pup from a reputable who dont have any pups, put you on their list and never hear from them again. They try to do it right and after a while end up getting a puppy mill pup from the local pet shop. Exhibitor/breeders that do this, take note of this. They will find a pup, hopefully not at the local pet shop. Thats my gripe for the day. Thanks for reading this. Cindy Sierra Dawn Bichons

Topic: My Bichon - Snowy

We adopted our "baby" almost two years ago. He is now 4. He is the best thing that for our family. He's also quite intelligent - sometimes a bit human-like.

Our vet has said that there is so much inter-breeding that their intelligence is being lost.

Snowy is extremely affectionate and is a true lap dog, but at his discretion.

When I die, I would like to come back as a Bichon, but in my family. We spoil him every chance we get.

Topic: ITCHY ANDY

Somebody please help my itchy Bichon. She scratches herself until she bleeds. We have had her to the vet over and over for tests which have concluded some type of an allergy. Her foods have been changed, her shampoos have been changed, she has been given vitamin supplements, etc. Nothing has worked. We are so frustrated. If anyone has any information on common allergies for this particular breed, please share the information with me. Andy will be a much better dog.

Topic: Biscuit

Hi Guys. I bought a Bichon three months ago. I researched for about a year before I decided onher. She is from a champion bloodline, but even that desn't account for the fact that she is the smartest, prettiest, best behaved dog ever. My hsband hates dogs, but he says Biscuit is his, and he even lets her on to our $3000.00 couch!! The kids are barely allowed on it. Anyway, I had to make a deal with the breeder that I purchased her from to let her have pick of the first litter, and choice of stud in exchange for a drop in cash price. That is fine by me, because I know nothing about the finer points of breeding, so I figure it is O.K. to leave it up to an expert. How many pups is the norm for a litter? And what would be the best age to let her have her first litter? She is five months old now, so I figure at least another year or so. And can you give me any tips on getting her in show coat? I brush her everyday, but I am a bit scared to trim her in case I mess it up. How short or long should the coat be on the body, and around the head? Anyway, that is all for now. By the way, Biscuit lives in Tom Price Western Australia, in a mining town, and I have no problems keeping her clean and looking great. Nothing else stays white, just her.

Topic: Allergies to Bichons?

I am allergic to just about every breed of dog that I have come in contact with except for Poodles. Someone told me that is because they have hair not fur. A friend who's mother has a Bichon, told me that Bichons are similar to Poodles in that way, and I may consider visiting with one to see I have an allergic reaction. Anyone with knowledge of this?

Topic: Norm and Sam

Love your site. We have two Bichons. They are typical...stubborn, lovable and the most important dogs we've ever owned (and we've had a few). Norm is six years and Sam is 18 months. Becky (my Bichon advocate and wife) insisted that Norm would love to have a companion. I finally agreed (Becky is very persistant!). Norm has accepted Sam as a brother (both are neutered males) and they are inseperable (sp?). They even share a crate.

We bought them each a cage, but they refused to be parted.

Norm has allergies and needs to be carefully examined for fleas. He does get hot spots and scares us to death. We'll never have another breed. I'm afraid that we may have actually been Bichons in a previous life.
